Success Story: Muhammad Umar Siddique - Maintenance Engineer at MOL

Muhammad Umar Siddique

    Maintenance Engineer at MOL
      M.S Mechanical Engineering (Thermal Power Engineering) (2008-   2012)
      B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering, UET Lahore (2003-2007)

Q) How did you join MOL, what was the process?

I joined MOL back in Aug 2008, through their fresh graduate hiring program. Each year MOL hires through this program named GROW 20XX …Grow 2104. The program consists of;
  1. A hiring test with four sections, IQ, GMAT (Math’s), Psychology and Some basic technical stuff!
  2. Followed by rounds of interview, mainly focusing on personality; Questions mainly asked are based on “behavioral interview techniques” and some related to games, hobbies, movies and books that you like
  3. Expressive writing skills etc you are asked to write an essay on your last tour/movie you have seen

Q) In your opinion, which key qualities did you have which enabled you to join MOL?

Generally companies are looking for following considerations, as they hire;
  1. A good academic career, Good GPAs is best to have but normal GPAs will also work. If you have other good things to justify like games, a good project(s), social work etc
  2. Company’s hiring test program, usually NTS and GMAT (Math’s/Analytical section) type
  3. A positive attitude, typically checked through multiple interviews rounds

Q) What have been some of the key achievements of your professional life & student life so far?

I feel like bragging while answering this question but for sake of guidance followings can be cited;
In my professional career, Alhamdolila, I have successfully been able to earn many international certifications pertinent to my field apart from a good reputation at my work place over these years. Although I have always considered myself as a student but back in university time; apart a distinguished academic record I have had a wonderful time interacting and managing stuff as a CR (Class representative)

Q) Did you work at some other company before MOL? If so, then which was it? What about internships?
Yes, I served KSB Pumps Co. (A German MNC) at their head office in Lahore, as an application/sales engineer for about an year. It was a wonderful and diversified experience of engineering and sales
Back in my student life, had worked with ICI and PEL as an intern and they were pretty useful in terms of industrial exposure and guidance from Alumni over there.

Q) What are the best parts & not to good parts that you have experienced in your job?
The best part of my job is that I see growth ahead as a career not just in terms of titles and monetary benefits but in terms of knowledge and skill as well. Moreover, what I get is a good time to spend with my parents and family, which I believe is what I have earned the most in all these years.
Generally at job, you don’t invent the wheel or do rocket science every day. Which at times leaves you in a boring mode but you have to set your aims higher than your routine. The main part is to get accustomed to your daily routine initially and then improvise things accordingly. If you are still left with energy, which usually you are, then plan some certifications, degree, social work or what pleases you. The only thing limiting you is just you!

Q) What advice can you give to others who want to join MOL?
·
  1. MOL holds an online game (named Freshhh) competition annually with its finals in Hungary (Budapest) which I strongly advise youngsters to register and play; this can be the easiest way into MOL! https://www.facebook.com/molfreshhh
  2. Secondly the routine fresh graduate hiring ,  MOL runs a program for fresh grads every year namely like Grow 2014
  3. Last but not the least, for lateral hiring MOL usually prefers incumbents from Fertilizer, Refinery and similar oil production and service companies.
