Hamza Safdar
Supervisor Leaf Controls at Philip Morris International (PMI)
B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering, EME College NUST (2006-2010)
Q) How did you join PMI,
what was the process?
The recruitment team visited EME and conducted a test before
shortlisting candidates for the interviews. Further shortlisting was done for
the second interview.
Q) In your opinion, which key qualities did you have which
enabled you to join PMI?
Right after graduation, all you need is some confidence and
a bit of luck. Once you clear the test, it all depends on how confidently you
present yourself in the interviews. GPA doesn’t really matter except for the
initial screening done by some (not all) companies.
Q) What have been some of the key
achievements of your professional life & student life so far?
At PMI I have worked in
Operations, Internal Controls, Information Systems and Operations Finance. Not
many people get to work in such diverse functions in a short span of time.
During this time, I have learnt A LOT and have been granted 2 performance based
awards.
Q) Did you work at some other
company before PMI? If so, then which was it? What about internships?
I joined PMI right after
graduation. Before that, I did a couple of internships at KSB Pumps Company and
JGC Descon Ltd.
PMI is the largest tobacco company in the world and that
gets you an amazing international exposure. The environment is great and your
performance is rewarded. It’s a great company to work for.
Q) What advice can you give to others who want to join PMI?
Well, like I said, if you get shortlisted for the
interviews, all you need is some self-confidence and you’ll be good to go. PMI
has a recruitment drive in the universities including NUST, GIKI, UET Lahore
and Mehran University. Doesn’t mean there aren’t any engineers from other
universities though.
